Science in the Summer

Science in the Summer is a hands-on science program underwritten by GlaxoSmithKline.

Participating public libraries in the Delaware Valley, including the Horsham Township Library, offer Science in the Summer to encourage elementary school age children to enjoy learning about basic science concepts. That way, children may be motivated to continue to learn about science, to take science courses in higher grades, and eventually to pursue careers in science and technology.

In the summer of 2008, public libraries in Montgomery County will offer the Science in the Summer course "Genetics."
Day 1 Students will be introduced to the terms genetics, traits, cell, nucleus, chromosome, genes, and DNA through activities and discussions. They will learn that traits are special features that all living things have and that they get them from their parents. Students will observe how living things are similar to the others of its kind, but that at the same time are different. The children will identify some of their traits and those of their classmates. They will build a cell to investigate how chromosomes can fit into it and ho~ genes that cause traits are arranged on chromosomes.
Day 2 Students will learn that chromosomes are in every cell in their body. They will discover how the chromosomes can fit into the cell. Students will learn about the discovery of James Watson and Francis Crick and the structure of DNA. They will learn that living things have different traits and that this is due to their DNA. Students will learn about dominant and recessive traits by making a bracelet with beads that represent some of their traits.
Day 3 Students will extract DNA from a strawberry. They will learn that DNA is a set of instructions to determine characteristics or qualities that an individual has and will discover what can happen if the instructions or message changes. Students will learn about hybrids to understand the mixing of genes and traits.
Day 4 Students will study their fingerprints and learn that no two living things have the same fingerprints. Students will learn how DNA strands can be separated into fragments and used to identify people. All students will separate color into its parts using a paper chromatography experiment. Level II students will simulate the separation of DNA fragments through electrophoresis. All students will build their own model of DNA. Teachers will distribute certificates and congratulate students.

Horsham Township Library's Science in the Summer program is a four-day series of classes to be held in the afternoon from July 7 through July 10.

All children must be pre-registered to attend Science in the Summer classes. The library will accept registrations from May 27 through June 16. A parent must come in person to the library to fill out and sign the registration form for his or her child. Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis; however, residents of Horsham Township will be given first preference for the limited number of spaces in each class. Children who live outside Montgomery County will be referred back to their home counties to register for Science in the Summer classes.

Level 1 classes, for children entering second and third grades, will be held from 2 to 2:45 PM. Level 2 classes, for children entering fourth through sixth grades, will be held from 3:15 to 4 PM. Space will be limited to 30 participants.

For further information, telephone the library's children's department at (215) 443-2609, ext. 204.

Volunteers needed for Science in the Summer

The library is recruiting two or three volunteers to help the Science in the Summer teacher during the Science in the Summer classes. Volunteers may be teens or adults and should be interested in working with children ages seven through twelve. Volunteers will help the teacher set up, help children carry out class activities, and will help the teacher organize and pack up materials on the last class day. Volunteers should be available Monday, July 7 through Thursday, July 10 from 12:30 PM through 4 PM. To volunteer please telephone the library at (215) 443-2609, ext. 206 and speak with or email Children's Librarian Ellyn Benner or Library Director Laurie Tynan.
